Rhawnhurst is an affordable, friendly, safe neighborhood located in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Besides having all of the features that a frum person wants, such as schools, shuls, kosher markets, kosher restaurants, Torah learning classes, and a large eruv, the most outstanding feature of Rhawnhurst is the affordability of the housing market. Truly, the real beauty of this Philadelphia Jewish community is in the people who live here. The sense of caring for each other and sharing each other’s simchas as well as helping when a family needs an act of chesed can only be appreciated by living here. Our community now has approximately 450 families. Most of these families have children and send them to Hebrew Day School. The four elementary schools servicing Jewish Philadelphia are Politz Hebrew Academy, Torah Academy, Politz Day School of Cherry Hill and Abrams Academy. The Stern Hebrew High School has moved to Rhawnhurst. This marks the first time students living in the neighborhood are able to walk to a Torah oriented school. On school days, visitors and Rhawnhurst residents are welcome to attend the school's 8:00 am minyan. Also, families in Rhawnhurst have other choices for High School, including Torah Academy High School for girls, the Philadelphia Yeshiva for boys, the Chofetz Chaim High School of Cherry Hill, New Jersey (Mesivta Bais Dovid) for boys, and the Bucks County Yeshiva High School for boys. The people here are hard-working professionals, business owners, and tradesmen. The employment picture is extremely good. Teachers are almost guaranteed getting a position here that pays in the upper twenty-fifth percent of what teachers are paid nationwide. Healthcare is another area where many people find employment with over 25 major hospitals located within commuting distance to the area. Computer technology is also a field in which many of our residents are employed. For more specific information about employment go to www.philly.com and click on jobs. Teachers should go to www.pareap.net. There is now a Shomer Shabbat Girl Scout Troop convenient to Rhawnhurst. Junior Girl Scout Troop 1613 meets at the JCC Klein Branch two Sundays a month at 4pm. Shomer Shabbat Brownie Troop 1948 also meets there at the same time. They are looking for new members, and anyone interested can call Bettina Dunn at 215-342-2790. The shuls, businesses and kosher restaurants of Rhawnhurst welcome tourists who come to the area to visit attractions such as the National Constitution Center, Penn's Landing, the Philadelphia Zoo, Sesame Place, the Adventure Aquarium, the Independence Seaport Museum, the Liberty Bell, Valley Forge, the Franklin Institute, the National Museum of American Jewish History, Longwood Gardens and the Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site.
